Leave your seat empty for Ohio State.
Saturday, Nov. 21, Nebraska vs. Ohio State in Lincoln. No ticket? Don't buy one. Have one? Stay home.
Fans are the last walk-ons: they pay their own way, get no guarantees, and are expected to be grateful. Coaches have buyouts. Players have the portal. Schools have new conferences. They're all behaving rationally. Fans are allowed to join them.
The first ask has a date
Ohio State comes to Lincoln on Saturday, Nov. 21. It's the last home game of the year,2 and also Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day,44 so please read this before you decide. That's soon. As of Nov. 1, 2026, the official schedule still has a "Buy Tickets" link up, and we found no sellout announcement.2
- Don't have a ticket? Don't buy one. No single-game deal, no mini plan, no voucher. Not even for the Runza.
- Already have a ticket? Stay home. You've paid, you've been counted, and your favorite beer is in stock and at market prices. Leave the seat empty.
- Going anyway? Have a great time. Truly. This isn't a loyalty test. We've had enough of those. If you're there to honor a senior or a veteran, that's a good reason.
If nothing changes, the bowl game is next, and after that the 2027 home opener. Attendance is the one vote fans get, and the program has been counting it as automatic.
The numbers first
Announced vs. scanned for Illinois in 2018. Nebraska says announced figures also include staff, media, bands, and others.35 That's a lot of bands.
Under Rhule against everyone outside the power conferences, like Akron and Houston Christian. Against power-conference teams, it's 15-22. Progress depends on which column you read. More.
Through Oct. 31, 2026. See the running tracker.
There are two scoreboards. Only one is on the banner.
The streak counts tickets sold, regardless of who uses them. It has outlasted seven straight losing seasons, and it can be kept going with discounts and a generous donor: before the opener was declared sold out on Sept. 1, a local report said "steep discounts and concessions vouchers were offered" to move the remaining tickets.3 Nobody did anything wrong there. That's just what managing inventory looks like. Mattress stores do it too.
So let's be plain: your empty seat probably won't end the streak. The name is the question, not a prediction: only unsold tickets can end the count, and someone can always buy them. Next year, up to 20,000 seats come out for construction,10 which makes the count even easier to keep. If No. 417 gets announced on Nov. 21, we won't pretend otherwise.
That's the distinction. The university's own release says fans "have filled Memorial Stadium since 1962."13 Filled is a different claim from sold, and it's the one anybody with a TV can check. An empty seat is a step in its own right, even if the official count never moves, because it's the hardest number to discount, voucher, or buy in bulk.
Who's still loyal? A quick roll call.
This isn't an accusation. Everyone below made a sensible decision, and we'd probably do the same. That's the point.
The coaches
NopeMatt Rhule has been head coach at Temple, Baylor, the Carolina Panthers, and now Nebraska.15 His deal runs through 2032, averages over $11.7 million a year with retention bonuses, and is 90% guaranteed.14 Good for him. Your season ticket has no guarantee of any percentage.
The players
SomeA locker room isn't one thing. Some players have agents, options, and real money: one set of NIL deals with 18 Nebraska players was reported at $7.5 million before regulators sent it back for a rework, and schools don't disclose who gets what.12 Others have far less leverage, and the walk-on program, which dates to 1962, is running into a 105-player roster limit.20 This year's team has 16 first-year transfers.21 Haves and have-nots.
The conferences
NopeNebraska left the Big 12 for the Big Ten in 2011.22 Texas and Oklahoma went to the SEC. USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington went to the Big Ten. Stanford and Cal joined the Atlantic Coast Conference.23 We'll wait. Even schedules move: Nebraska canceled its 2026 and 2027 games against Tennessee, and Bowling Green got the 2026 date.24
We could be wrong, and we'll say so
The team is 5-3 and has lost three straight by a total of 13 points.2 That could be a program about to break through. We can't prove empty seats produce wins; nobody can. Here's everything we know that cuts against us.
And if Nebraska beats Ohio State on Nov. 21, we'll post the correction in a very large font and enjoy it as much as anyone.
